All about Minecraft armor trims
Armor trims are cosmetic decorations introduced in Minecraft 1.20. There are 18 patterns and 11 materials, giving 198 possible combinations per piece — and each piece can be customised independently.
How this armor trim generator works
Minecraft does not ship a finished texture for every trimmed armor piece. It builds one at runtime: the game reads a greyscale pattern mask, then remaps each grey value through the colour palette of the material you applied. This generator runs that same compositing step in your browser, so the model above is the texture the game will actually render — not an artist's mock-up.
- Choose a pattern. All 18 smithing templates are here, from the 1.20 originals through Bolt, Flow and Host from Tricky Trials. The pattern decides the shape.
- Choose a material. The 11 trim materials only recolour that shape. Copper reads warm and rusty, Amethyst shifts purple, Quartz gives the highest contrast on dark armor.
- Mix per piece. Helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots are independent. Trimming only the chest and boots is a common look and costs half the templates.
- Take the command. Copy a ready /give for Java 1.21 components, Java 1.20.4 NBT, or the Bedrock base item plus its smithing-table recipe.
Test a combination before you farm the template
Silence sits at a 1.7% drop per Ancient City chest and Bolt at 1.8% per Vault. Spending a weekend on a template only to find the colour disappears against your armor base is the single most common regret with trims. That is what this preview is for: use it as a trim tester, decide the pairing while it costs nothing, then farm the one template you actually want.

Armor trim questions people actually ask
- Do armor trims do anything, or are they purely cosmetic?
- Purely cosmetic. A trim changes no stat — not armor points, not toughness, not durability, not enchantment behaviour. The one mechanical side effect is that trimmed armor cannot be stacked back with untrimmed armor in a crafting grid for repair; use an anvil or grindstone instead.
- What is the rarest armor trim in Minecraft?
- Silence, at roughly 1.7% per Ancient City chest — Ancient Cities sit in the Deep Dark, below y=0 under mountainous and highland terrain. Bolt (1.8% per Trial Chamber Vault) and Host (2.5%) are close behind, and Raiser, Shaper and Wayfinder each sit near 2.8% per suspicious-gravel block in Trail Ruins.
- Which armor trim is easiest to get?
- Spire, at 33.3% per End City chest. Sentry is next at 25% from the top-floor chest of a pillager outpost, then Coast and Snout at 16.7%. Any of the three is a realistic first trim in a fresh world.
- Can you remove an armor trim once it is applied?
- No. Applying a trim at a smithing table is permanent for that piece, and applying a second trim over it is not possible either. Trim a spare piece if you are unsure — which is exactly what the preview above is meant to save you from.
- How do you duplicate a smithing template?
- Put the original template, 7 diamonds and 1 of the structure's own block into a crafting table, and you get 2 copies back. The block differs per template — Netherrack for Rib, Cobbled Deepslate for Silence and Host, Prismarine for Tide, Purpur for Spire. Every per-trim page lists its own recipe.
- Do armor trims work the same on Bedrock Edition?
- The trims themselves are identical, but the commands are not. Java 1.21 sets a trim directly with an item component; Bedrock's /give has no equivalent argument, so the workflow is to give yourself the base armor and the template, then apply it at a smithing table. Both command forms are generated above.
- How many armor trim combinations are there?
- 18 patterns × 11 materials = 198 looks per piece. Across 8 armor bases that is 1,584 distinct trimmed pieces, and because all four slots are independent the number of full outfits runs into the billions. Browsing that by farming templates is impossible, which is the reason this tool exists.
