Armor trim FAQ

Minecraft armor trims: frequently asked questions

Short, direct answers to the questions players ask most about Minecraft armor trims. Use the 3D generator to preview any combination and copy the matching Java or Bedrock command.

What are armor trims in Minecraft?

Armor trims are cosmetic decorations added in Minecraft 1.20. There are 18 patterns and 11 materials, which gives 198 possible looks per piece, and each of the four armor pieces can be trimmed independently. They change only the appearance of the armor. You can preview every combination in the 3D generator and browse the full pattern list with drop chances on the home page.

How do you apply an armor trim?

Use a smithing table with three ingredients: an armor trim smithing template, the armor piece you want to decorate, and a trim material such as an ingot or crystal. The smithing table consumes the template and the material and stamps the pattern onto the armor. The process is the same in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

Do armor trims affect defense, stats, or durability?

No. Trims are purely cosmetic and have no effect on armor points, enchantments, or durability in vanilla Minecraft. They exist only to personalise how your armor looks, so you can trim your best gear without any downside.

Can one armor piece have more than one trim?

No. Each piece holds a single trim at a time. If you apply a new template to already-trimmed armor, the old pattern is overwritten and you do not get the previous template back. To mix looks across a set, trim each of the four pieces separately.

Is the smithing template used up when I apply a trim?

Yes. Applying a trim consumes the template (and the material). Because a full set needs four applications, duplicate a rare template first: combine it with 7 diamonds and its matching base block at a crafting table to get a copy. See the farming guides for the duplication block that pairs with each pattern.

What is the rarest armor trim?

The most prestigious are the Ancient City trims, Silence and Ward, plus Tide from Elder Guardians — all epic-tier and slow to farm. Among the 1.21 Trial Chamber trims, Bolt and Host have the lowest drop rates. Exact drop chances for all 18 are in the table on the home page.

Which materials can I use, and do diamond and netherite both work?

There are 11 trim materials — iron, copper, gold, lapis, redstone, amethyst, quartz, netherite, diamond, emerald, and resin (added in 1.21.4). Any material can be applied to any armor tier, so both diamond and netherite armor accept every trim. For the clearest look, pair a light material with a dark base — for example a bright trim on netherite.

Do armor trims work in Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Applying a trim at the smithing table works the same on Bedrock as on Java. The differences are in commands and a few duplication blocks: Bedrock command syntax is not identical to Java, and brushing Trail Ruins has a lower per-attempt rate on Bedrock. See the Bedrock generator and the Bedrock command limits guide.

Can I trim a turtle shell, and can weapons be trimmed?

A turtle shell counts as a helmet, so it accepts trims — though on versions before 1.21.2 the trim can render invisible. In vanilla, trims are armor-only: the helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots slots. Swords, tools, shields, and the elytra cannot be trimmed without mods.

How do I write the /give command for a trimmed armor piece?

The format depends on your edition: Java 1.21+ uses item components, Java 1.20.4 uses NBT, and Bedrock uses its own grammar. The easiest path is to build the look in the generator and copy the ready-made command for your version.

Can I preview a trim before farming the template?

Yes — that is exactly what this site is for. Pick any armor, pattern, and material in the real-time 3D generator, check it on your own skin, and only then go farm the template you actually like. You can also compare two combinations side by side.
